SUMMARY:Excursion: Getting to know old varieties of orchards and various dry grass plants in the Criewen Park Garden
DESCRIPTION:Today\, orchards are not only a traditional form of fruit growing\, but the areas also serve as grassland\, for example for mowing or extensive grazing. Prof. Dr. Gisbert Schalitz (Martin Luther University Halle) leads this excursion on the topic of orchards and vegetation on dry grassland. As a grassland scientist\, forest and orchard grower\, Prof. Schalitz is an expert in this field and conveys interesting facts about old fruit varieties\, but also interesting facts about various dry grassland plants in a generally understandable form. SUMMARY:Excursion: Agroforestry and orchards in the Lower Oder Valley National Park
DESCRIPTION:Bicycle excursion to the orchard near Gellmersdorf / Stolzenhagen \nOrchards are not only used for growing fruit\, but the areas are also used as grassland\, for example for mowing or extensive grazing (agroforestry). In agroforestry\, trees and arable crops\, meadows and pastures are combined in one area in such a way that it is equally beneficial for agriculture\, nature and the climate. The orchard of the Lower Oder Valley National Park Association\, planted with old fruit varieties\, offers plants and animals\, so-called cultural followers\, varied and diverse habitats. Thomas Michael (Managing Director of the Lower Oder Valley National Park Foundation) imparts a lot of interesting information about agroforestry\, old fruit varieties and experiences and results in creating new orchards in a generally understandable form. SUMMARY:Excursion: Butterflies on dry grass in the Müllerberge
DESCRIPTION:Butterflies live almost everywhere on earth where there are plants. In our latitudes they love sun\, warmth and diverse and flowery vegetation. In Central Europe\, butterflies usually inhabit open areas such as meadows and pastures\, but also clearings and forest edges. Many butterflies are not only beautiful\, they also have an important role in nature. SUMMARY:Excursion: Bees and wasps - Mysterious diversity
DESCRIPTION:Does not take place in rainy weather! \nThe unique world of bees and wasps is varied. The wild bees in particular show the diversity\, beauty and uniqueness of the local nature. SUMMARY:Excursion: vast meadows\, wild forest - hike along the wilderness adventure trail to the bison pasture
DESCRIPTION:The wilderness adventure trail in Criewen was created from the so-called wild forest path\, which was heavily influenced by storm “Xavier” in October 2017. A section (1 km) was not cleared after the storm so that the wilderness could be experienced directly. This excursion shows the consequences of the storm and how the wilderness is developing: Fallen trees\, huge root plates\, dead wood that rots and gives rise to new life\, an experience of nature that makes it clear how impressive wild forests can be. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nUnfortunately\, in February 2021\, the wilderness adventure path was destroyed by an illegal chainsaw action by residents of Criewen\, a shame for nature\, but also for the many tourists for whom this rustic obstacle course was a highlight of their visit to the lower Oder valley. But even now the wilderness adventure trail is an experience\, even if more for the eyes than for the muscles. \nThe wilderness adventure trail leads to the bisons\, the real kings of the forest. Since 2012\, the last domestic wild cattle in Europe have been kept by the Lower Oder Valley National Park Foundation in the only national park in Brandenburg. European bison were already at home here when there was no state of Brandenburg and no national park. They belong\, so to speak\, to the indigenous people who have now returned to their old homeland. \nAfter a short walk through the national park\, the excursion participants come to the real kings of the forest\, who are expertly appointed by the board of directors of the Lower Oder Valley National Park Foundation\, Dr. Ansgar Vössing. Sturdy shoes and binoculars are advantageous. \nThe excursion is free\, but donations are welcome. \nWe ask for prior registration at the e‑mail address: d.lindemann@nationalpark-unteres-odertal.de\, phone +49 (0)3332–219822 or via the booking function at the bottom of this page. \nThe board of directors \n

SUMMARY:Conference: What digs where and when in the forest? Mice and other small mammals
DESCRIPTION:What is digging where and when in the forest? Mice and other small mammals \nThe Lower Oder Valley National Park and many other protected areas in the north German lowlands traditionally focus on bird research. In addition to ornithology\nmammal studies are often neglected. Most of the mammals in the forest are nocturnal and difficult to observe. With this German-Polish conference we want to track them down\, for example with mammal studies in the two national parks of the Lower Oder Valley National Park and the Slowinski National Park. At the conference\, among other things\, reported on the German-Polish coöperation project in mammal science. \nIn addition\, all mammal researchers are invited to bring their experiences and results from mammal research in Central European forests to general knowledge and to present them for discussion. First of all mice and other rodents\, but also other mammals\, immigrant and returning home\, should be discussed. \nThe conference is aimed at conservationists and mammal researchers\, but also at fishermen and anglers\, farmers and foresters and officials. The aim is a broad exchange of experiences among mammal researchers with conclusions about the upcoming climate changes and the expected shifts in the spectrum of species. \nConference languages: German\, Polish

SUMMARY:Conference: Wild animals as carriers of farm animal diseases
DESCRIPTION:Wild animals as carriers of farm animal diseases \nViruses are everywhere\, not only in the computer\, corona\, bird flu and swine fever are also transmitted by viruses. Each of us has suffered from it in one way or another. Wild animals are often targeted as carriers of both farm animal diseases and human diseases. The wild animal markets of China are considered to be breeding grounds and starting points for serious epidemics. Wild animals are often severely decimated in order to protect farm animals. These phenomena must be scientifically investigated and processed so that the right decisions can be made on a reliable basis. \nThe international conference is not only aimed at specialists such as virologists\, doctors and other scientists\, but also at those affected\, such as farmers and foresters\, nature conservationists and officials. \nConference languages: German\, English\, Polish

SUMMARY:Conference: Planting and maintaining hedges and woodlands and forest initialization measures
DESCRIPTION:Planting and maintenance of hedges and field trees (forest initialization) \nThe agricultural landscapes of Eastern Elbe\, but also in many other parts of Europe\, have been largely cleared and straightened for economic reasons over the past few decades\, while landscape-shaping structures such as hedges and field trees have been removed. This not only has a massive impact on biodiversity\, but also encourages soil erosion. If we start again today to eliminate the mistakes of the past\, if possible to plant new hedges and field trees on old structures\, then this will not only serve the protection of species\, especially the birds and insects\, but also the necessary adaptation of agriculture to climate change in large parts of Europe and also Brandenburg will bring higher temperatures and lower precipitation in the future. \nIn the Lower Oder Valley\, many kilometers of new hedges and field trees have been created in recent years\, often financed as compensation and replacement measures for interventions in nature and the landscape. That is money well spent. On the one hand\, we want to pass on these positive experiences\, on the other hand\, we also want to benefit from good results from other areas. \nThe international conference serves above all the exchange of the practitioners\, of farmers and foresters\, landscape planners\, horticulturists and officials and of course nature conservationists in a special way. \nConference languages: German\, English

SUMMARY:Excursion: Nature conservationists and landscape conservationists of a special kind - water buffalo in the Friedrichsthaler Polder 5/6
DESCRIPTION:Water buffalo have been kept in the Lower Oder Valley National Park for several years as agricultural livestock. Even before the Ice Age\, wild water buffalo lived in the lower Oder Valley\, as fossil finds show. In the national park\, water buffalo are not released into the wild or kept as a substitute for the wild form that has long been extinct. \nWater buffalo are frugal animals. They can use feed of lower quality than the usual domestic cattle. Above all\, however\, they can develop habitats that domestic cattle would avoid: wetlands\, swampy terrain and bog sites. Wherever they graze they replace domestic cattle. The water buffalo are farm animals that keep the meadows free and short for us so that the meadow breeders\, for whom the national park was essentially created\, can also find suitable breeding grounds in the spring. They also serve to protect nature. \nYou will find the water buffalo pasture in the Friedrichsthaler Polder (5/6)\, east of the federal highway 2\, between Friedrichsthal and Gartz (Oder) (see map). The imposing water buffalo are managed by the board of directors of the Lower Oder Valley National Park Foundation\, Dr. Ansgar Vössing\, presented scientifically and yet in a way that is easy to understand. Weatherproof clothing and sturdy shoes are advantageous. \n \nThe excursion takes place in the great outdoors\, all distances can be maintained and all currently valid state regulations are observed. \nThe excursion is free\, but donations are welcome. \nWe kindly ask you to register in advance at the e‑mail address: d.lindemann@nationalpark-unteres-odertal.de\, telephone +49 (0)3332–219822 or via the booking function at the bottom of this page. \nThe board \n

SUMMARY:Excursion: The importance of the canary grass meadows for ecological agriculture as well as for nature and environmental protection
DESCRIPTION:This excursion will not take place!!!\n  \nOn this bicycle excursion you will learn interesting facts not only about grassland meadows in general\, but also about reed canary grass meadows in particular. Reed canary grass resembles reed canary grass and is found in wet meadows and often along riverbanks. Cattail grass plays an important role in ecological agriculture and nature and environmental protection. Reed canarygrass is a soil firming grass\, as a mass growing mowing grass it is very productive and is considered an energy crop with high biomass yield. The expert Prof. Dr. Gisbert Schalitz will tell you a lot of interesting facts\, not only about reed canary grass meadows\, but also about today’s land use in the polders and the unique flora in the Lower Oder Valley and much more\, scientifically and yet generally understandable. For closer identification of the vegetation\, an identification book is advantageous. \nThe excursion takes place in the great outdoors\, all distances can be observed and all currently valid state regulations are observed. \nThe excursion is free\, but donations are welcome. \nWe ask for prior registration at the e‑mail address: d.lindemann@nationalpark-unteres-odertal.de\, phone +49 (0)3332–219822 or via the booking function at the bottom of this page. \nThe board of directors

SUMMARY:Conference: Meadow Breeding Conservation - A Lost Cause?
DESCRIPTION:Meadow Breeding Conservation — A Lost Cause? \nMany millions of Euros have been invested and sunk into meadow breeding protection in Central Europe over the past decades\, with hardly any discernible success. Breeding bird populations are declining. Things are looking a little better on the coast\, with migratory birds also opening up bright spots. Was it all in vain? Are there no means and methods to success? One should not be too pessimistic\, but new\, courageous paths would have to be taken. There are a few ways to help meadow nesting birds. Not only farmers and land users\, but also hunters and even walkers can contribute to easing the situation for meadow-nesting birds. \nThe conference is therefore aimed at all those who have an interest in growing populations of meadow-nesting birds in Central Europe. We do not want to stop at just taking stock\, but analyse the causes and develop perspectives for the future. Water and landscape management measures seem to play a special role. And what influence do the small predators have on the ground but also from the air? \nThe conference is aimed at conservationists\, scientists\, farmers and foresters\, ornithologists and public authorities. Only together will there be a solution.

SUMMARY:Conference: This is the Berlin air\, air\, air - air pollution control concepts in the course of social change
DESCRIPTION:That is the Berlin air\, air\, air — air pollution control concepts in the course of social change \nThe Technical Instructions on Air Conditioning (TA Luft) have just been amended by the Bundestag and Bundesrat in a lengthy and complex process. There is therefore a new legal basis in Germany for air pollution control. This is the reason for us\, after we dealt with pollutants in inland waters in 2020\, to now turn to air pollutants. Yes\, the air in Central Europe has become cleaner since the 1980s\, sulfur dioxide emissions\, for example\, have been significantly reduced. This is more difficult with nitrogen oxides and fine dust. So there is still enough to be done. \nThe conference provides information on current problems and modern solutions for air pollution control\, by no means only in cities and industrial areas. Pollutants in the air spread worldwide and also reach remote natural landscapes. Not only experts and scientists\, especially doctors\, but also all affected people\, by no means just nature and environmentalists\, are invited. Many people suffer from air pollutants\, and many clinical pictures can be traced back to them. \nConference languages: German and English

SUMMARY:Conference: Perspectives of the fish communities of large lowland rivers
DESCRIPTION:Of course\, everyone thinks first of sturgeon\, salmon\, sea trout and eel\, but other species of fish also migrate through the rivers\, provided they are not impassably obstructed\, although not over such great distances as the first three species mentioned. This conference is dedicated to all of them\, with a focus on anglers and fishermen\, but also on water engineers\, scientists\, nature conservationists\, farmers and public authorities. \nIn addition to hydraulic engineering maintenance measures in accordance with the EU Water Framework Directive\, it is important to ensure the passability of rivers\, unless the aim is to protect native aquatic species such as the noble crayfish from invasive species such as the American crayfish. On the eve of the International Migratory Fish Species Day (15.05.2020)\, this conference is therefore also aimed at the interested public in order to promote the passability and cleanliness of German rivers. \nThe Brandenburg Academy “Schloss Criewen” is a suitable location for this\, as it is situated directly on the Oder\, which\, apart from two small weirs in Silesia\, is still fairly continuous and unobstructed with its tributaries. Re-introduction projects for sturgeon are the logical consequence of this. Contributions are needed that help to understand the way of life of migratory fish species and to offer them assistance in environments that have been heavily altered by humans.

SUMMARY:Wide meadows\, wild forest - hike over the wilderness adventure trail to the bison pasture
DESCRIPTION:The wilderness adventure trail in Criewen was created from the so-called wild forest path\, strongly influenced by storm “Xavier” in October 2017. \nUnfortunately\, in February 2021\, the wilderness adventure trail was destroyed by an illegal chainsaw action by residents of Criewen\, a shame for nature\, but also for the many tourists for whom this rustic obstacle course was a highlight of their visit to the lower Oder valley. But even now the wilderness adventure trail is an experience\, even if more for the eyes than for the muscles. \nThe wilderness adventure trail leads to the bisons\, the real kings of the forest. Since 2012\, the last native wild cattle in Europe have been kept by the Lower Oder Valley National Park Foundation at the only national park in Brandenburg. \nAll currently valid state regulations are observed!\nThe excursion takes place in the great outdoors\, all distances can be observed. \nMeeting point: Criewen Castle\, main portal \nAn excursion to the Lower Oder Valley National Park Foundation together with Dr. Ansgar Vössing (board member). \nRegistration is required!
