As every year, the respon\u00adsi\u00adble State Envi\u00adron\u00adment Agency in the admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtive area of the Agri\u00adcul\u00adture Min\u00adis\u00adter, who is actu\u00adal\u00adly respon\u00adsi\u00adble for nature con\u00adser\u00adva\u00adtion, starts up the large, ener\u00adgy-guz\u00adzling pumps and the only flood\u00adplain nation\u00adal park in Ger\u00admany is pumped dry. Many rare birds, such as the Black Tern, the White Beard\u00aded Tern and the White-winged Tern, which have just start\u00aded breed\u00ading and are depen\u00addent on high water lev\u00adels, sit on dry land and with their nests are easy prey for the fox and rac\u00adcoon dog. These cost-inten\u00adsive mea\u00adsures are intend\u00aded to enable farm\u00aders to use grass\u00adland as ear\u00adly as pos\u00adsi\u00adble, although they are depen\u00addent on this for feed sup\u00adply, if at all, to a very lim\u00adit\u00aded extent.<\/p>\n<p> Accord\u00ading to Agri\u00adcul\u00adture Min\u00adis\u00adter Diet\u00admar Woid\u00adke on Decem\u00adber 27, 2006, the coun\u00adtry must man\u00adage its water even more, and sur\u00adface water must be kept in the land\u00adscape for as long as pos\u00adsi\u00adble before it flows away. There is actu\u00adal\u00adly noth\u00ading to add to these Christ\u00admas words by the Bran\u00adden\u00adburg min\u00adis\u00adter respon\u00adsi\u00adble for agri\u00adcul\u00adture, nature con\u00adser\u00adva\u00adtion and water man\u00adage\u00adment, giv\u00aden the increas\u00ading water pover\u00adty caused by cli\u00admate change, espe\u00adcial\u00adly in Bran\u00adden\u00adburg, which increas\u00ading\u00adly con\u00adjures up the risk of deser\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion. More and more agri\u00adcul\u00adtur\u00adal areas in Bran\u00adden\u00adburg already have to be irri\u00adgat\u00aded at great expense if they are to con\u00adtin\u00adue to gen\u00ader\u00adate suf\u00adfi\u00adcient yields.<\/p>\n<p>\n But there are chasms between a minister\u2019s Sun\u00adday speech\u00ades and the real\u00adi\u00adty he admin\u00adis\u00adters. In Germany\u2019s only flood\u00adplain nation\u00adal park, the Untere Oder Val\u00adley, after the inlet and out\u00adlet struc\u00adtures were closed in mid-April, the pold\u00aders that were pre\u00advi\u00adous\u00adly flood\u00aded in the win\u00adter half of the year are pumped out at great expense in terms of ener\u00adgy and costs. The water lev\u00adel in the pold\u00ader is then often pushed well below the water lev\u00adel of the Oder. A water study com\u00admis\u00adsioned by the state itself says that this is not nec\u00ades\u00adsary at all for flood pro\u00adtec\u00adtion rea\u00adsons and that the inlet and out\u00adlet struc\u00adtures at least in the Friedrich\u00adsthaler Pold\u00ader (10) could remain open all year round. The water lev\u00adel would nat\u00adu\u00adral\u00adly adjust to that of the&nbsp;Oder.<\/p>\n<p>\n The few farm\u00aders still work\u00ading there today would, how\u00adev\u00ader, have to switch to exten\u00adsive cul\u00adti\u00adva\u00adtion and, at least in wet years, forego the ear\u00adly use of their leased land. Most have long since agreed. The state of Bran\u00adden\u00adburg would save con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00adable finan\u00adcial resources through this con\u00adver\u00adsion and the only Bran\u00adden\u00adburg nation\u00adal park would then have the chance to devel\u00adop into a real nation\u00adal park, at least on a large part of the area. So it is time for the clever min\u00adis\u00adte\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal words to final\u00adly be fol\u00adlowed by con\u00adcrete action.<\/p>\n<p>\n At least it is encour\u00adag\u00ading that this year, due to the huge amount of water, pump\u00ading start\u00aded not in mid-April but in ear\u00adly May. How\u00adev\u00ader, as sug\u00adgest\u00aded in the Bran\u00adden\u00adburg water study, it would make sense not to pump out until the end of May in the Criewen\u00ader and Schwedt pold\u00ader (A \/ B), if nec\u00ades\u00adsary, and not at all in the Friedrich\u00adsthaler pold\u00ader (10).
